The day had finally arrived, we had reached Combarro, Spain with the start of boat life on SV Kerensa. We had said our 'goodbyes' to all our wonderful family and friends and especially our boys Cameron, Ellis and Daniel. Thankyou to everyone who had organised hotels, BBQs, restaurants and 'get togethers', bought us Champagne, and tiny gifts and had 'a drink on us' in the Whitstable Yacht Club... Friday night in the bar hasn't been so busy for a while.
Our first week on Kerensa has mainly been one of unpacking and finding space on an already full boat, getting to know where everything is and settling into boat life. Kerensa certainly needed a little TLC, as it had been over ten months since anyone had given her a scrub (apparently that was my job!). Nigel had his head in the engine, bilges and most nooks and crannies, searching for oil suction pipes, and appropriate engine parts taking a good part of a few days, as each job exposed more than we expected. Discovering for ourselves that any boat job is never straight forward. Also Kerensa now has her full compliment of name changes, as we found her old name stuck, sewn, nailed and glued to most boat areas. Not sure if we had mentioned it before Kerensa is the Cornish word for 'LOVE', my family heritage is mostly based in Cornwall, anyway Nauti Girl seemed a bit crass!
Finally (keeping it short), we listen daily to the music and clapping from the enthusiastic tourists on the harbour boat trips, venture to the bread shop, local cafes and supermarket (no charity shops here for me though!). The stay sail and genoa have been put back up and looking good, kayaks are a trip hazard but Im sure we will benefit from using them soon. And Nigel and I are both really happy to begin our new adventures.
